New Mercedes Sprinter Scooped In Spain, Will Be Offered As An EV

Work continues on the next-generation Mercedes Sprinter as spy photographers have snapped a prototype undergoing testing in Spain.

Dressed in heavy camouflage, this particular model is a high roof passenger van that features a new front fascia with a larger grille. The rest of the van looks pretty evolutionary but it appears the model will be slightly more aerodynamic than its predecessor.

A variety of different configurations will be available including the familiar cargo van, passenger van, and cab chassis options. Customers should also be able to select different lengths and roof types, among other things.

Little is known about the van at this point but Mercedes has already confirmed plans to invest $516 (€450) million into the Düsseldorf and Ludwigsfelde plants to support production of the model in Germany. The company is also building a new plant in North Charleston, South Carolina to meet increased demand in the United States.

Mercedes hasn't said much about performance specifications but the automaker has confirmed plans for an electric variant. Details are limited but the model will be built in Düsseldorf and Hermes Germany will become the first major customer with plans to deploy as many as 1,500 electric vans.
