America's Most Stolen Vehicle Is The Honda Accord

The National Insurance Crime Bureau has released its annual Hot Wheels report which reveals the 10 most stolen vehicles in America.

Using data from the National Crime Information Center, the report reveals the most stolen vehicle in the United States last year was the Honda Accord. It was closely followed by the Honda Civic with 49,547 reports of theft.

Pickups are popular with consumers and they also appear to be popular with thieves as Ford and Chevrolet full-size trucks came in third and fourth place, respectively.

Moving further down the list, there's the Toyota Camry, Nissan Altima, and full-size Ram trucks. Rounding out the top ten are the Toyota Corolla, Chevrolet Impala, and Jeep Cherokee / Grand Cherokee.

These models were the most stolen overall but many of the vehicles where older and didn't have "smart keys" or other modern anti-theft systems.

When just 2016 models are taken into consideration, the top three spots go to the Toyota Camry, Nissan Altima, and Toyota Corolla.

Vehicle thefts have dramatically decreased from their peak in 1992 but the NICB says owner need to use common sense when it comes to preventing theft. As NICB CEO Joe Wehrle explained, “Anti-theft systems in newer model cars and trucks are excellent, but they don’t work if you don’t use them. Far too many thefts occur because the vehicle is left unlocked and the key or fob is inside."
