BMW M Boss Isn't Interested In A New M1

The BMW M1 Hommage concept helped to spark renewed interested in the supercar but it appears the company has little desire to build an all-new model.

In an interview with CarAdvice, BMW M boss Frank Van Meel said “We are trying to make cars for customers, and trying to reach as many customers as possible – but to build a car for 200 people would not be our main target."

The executive went on to say every engineer dreams about building a supercar but "to be honest, instead of having one flagship, we would rather have an armada of fast vessels to attack a broader range of possible customer groups.”

BMW has the capability to build an all-new M1 but Van Meel says he doesn't feel to need to make "such a very niche product.” He also believes the company doesn't need a halo vehicle even though he personally admits he'd love to build one because it's fun.

While we shouldn't expect to see new a supercar, the company is working on a new M8. Van Meel says the model will be "very, very interesting" and "very fast." The car is expected to use the M5's 4.4-liter TwinPower Turbo V8 engine that produces 600 PS (441 kW) and 750 Nm (553 lb-ft) of torque.
