Ford Fiesta To Ditch EcoBoost Three-Cylinder In U.S.

Not only will the United States not receive the latest-generation Ford Fiesta but it’s been confirmed that the automaker will also drop the EcoBoost three-cylinder of the existing Fiesta.

Cars Direct reports that Ford has decided to drop the 1.0-liter EcoBoost due to dwindling local customer demand but will continue to sell the current Fiesta through the 2018 model year.

The removal of the three-cylinder from the 2018 Fiesta range means the less fuel efficient 1.6-liter inline-four will be the only powertrain available to U.S. buyers. This four-cylinder isn’t only less powerful than the EcoBoost (120 hp vs 123 hp) but it is less fuel efficient, returning 27 mpg in the city and 37 mpg on the highway. By comparison, the EcoBoost is rated at 31 mpg city and 41 mpg highway.

While Ford will no longer offer the EcoBoost with the Fiesta in the U.S., it will remain available in the Focus SE Sedan.

On the back of falling Fiesta sales across America, there’s a good chance the removal of this engine option could be just the first move in Ford killing off the Fiesta altogether.
