New Chevrolet Silverado And GMC Sierra Slated To Offer Carbon Fiber Beds

General Motors mocked Ford for using aluminum beds in the F-150 and that struck many people as a surprise considering the redesigned Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra were expected to go the same route.

However, Autonews and The Wall Street Journal are reporting the upcoming trucks will instead use a mix of lightweight materials including aluminum and carbon fiber. Nothing is official but speculation suggests the trucks may use carbon fiber reinforced thermoplastic which has company has been developing since 2011.

Little is known about the company's plan but the WSJ says the mixed material bed will be offered within the next two years. The report also claims the bed would to limited to higher-end versions of the pickups which presumably means we could see it on the next GMC Sierra Denali. Over time, the beds could eventually become available on more mainstream models.

The 2019 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra are expected to be unveiled shortly and this points to a debut at the North American International Auto Show. If that's the case, the models will be shown alongside the 2019 Ram 1500 which is expected to be lighter and more efficient that its predecessor.
