BMW Hatches The New X2 Crossover In Detroit

BMW already offers five crossovers in the United States but that hasn't stopped the company from unveiling a sixth model at the North American International Auto Show.

Billed as a sporty and urban crossover, the X2 eschews the coupe-inspired styling of the larger X4 and X6 for a unique appearance that resembles a large hatchback. It remains to be seen how wagon-hating America will respond to his decision but the model is based on the popular X1 and is 2.8 inches lower and 3.2 inches shorter than its counterpart.

The interior styling will be familiar to BMW fans and drivers will SensaTec upholstery, high-gloss black trim, and a freestanding 6.5-inch infotainment system. A variety of options will be available including Dakota leather, a heads-up display, and an 8.8-inch infotainment system with GPS navigation.

A 2.0-liter TwinPower Turbo four-cylinder engine resides under the hood and produces 228 hp (170 kW) and 258 lb-ft (349 Nm) of torque. It is connected to an eight-speed automatic transmission and an all-wheel-drive system which enables the X2 to accelerate from 0-60 mph in 6.3 seconds before hitting a top speed of up to 143 mph (230 km/h).

The 2018 BMW X2 will go on sale in the United States this spring and pricing starts at $38,400.
