Well here’s something we thought we’d never see; a custom BMW Isetta that’s been converted into a pickup truck.
The unique vehicle was recently sold for a touch over $12,000 on Bring A Trailer and while an Isetta pickup sounds like something from the Frankenstein novel, it actually appears to be quite well built and is certainly not something you’d be ashamed to drive.
The listing says that this 1957 BMW Isetta started life out like any other Isetta. However, the previous owner, a former technician at the BMW plant in Munich, decided to convert the tiny, one-door car, into a pickup when they moved to Canada.
Powering the pickup is a 1.6-liter Volkswagen flat-four that’s been mated to a four-speed manual transmission. The pickup bed itself is rather nontraditional and is made up of Brazilian Balau hardwood and free of any sides or a tailgate, clearly impacting its practicality. However, the results do look rather special.
Under the ownership of the seller, the car had its yellow vinyl wrap removed and replaced by a 50’s style non-metallic green paint scheme. Trimmings are then painted in black and the pickup bed itself can actually tilt upwards.
What do you think of this conversion? Are you a fan or do you think it’s ghastly?
