Tesla Fails To Meet Model 3 Targets As Model S And X Deliveries Rise

Tesla has just announced its quarterly production figures and while the Model S and Model X are selling better than ever, the Model 3 is getting off to a slower start than expected.

At the launch of the entry-level sedan in July, Tesla chief executive Elon Musk said approximately 100 examples would be built in August before production ramped up to over 1,500 examples in September. However, the company’s quarterly results reveal that just 260 Model 3s were built in Q3 “due to production bottlenecks.”

The automaker hasn’t specified exactly what is holding up production of the Model 3 but stressed “that there are no fundamental issues with the Model 3 production or supply chain,” indicating that the issues will be fixed “in the near-term.”

Looking beyond the Model 3, deliveries of the Model S and Model X reached record heights with a total of 25,930 finding new homes this quarter, a 4.5 per cent increase over Q3 2016 and 17.7 per cent greater than Q2 2017. Alongside the Model S and Model X vehicles delivered, approximately 4,820 were in transit at the end of the quarter.

Tesla ultimately expects to deliver about 100,000 Model S and X vehicles in 2017.
