Next-Gen VW Golf To Launch Alongside I.D. Hatch

Volkswagen will launch the eighth-generation VW Golf almost exactly the same time as the I.D. electric hatchback.

According to board member and head of sales and marketing, Jurgen Stackman, the carmaker will premiere the new Golf in early 2018 and just weeks later, unveil the I.D.

“There is going to be an extremely strong new Golf 8 coming, it will launch just a month ahead of the I.D. We believe that they both stand on their own feet, in their own rights,” he told Drive.

Stackman went on to reveal that an all-electric version of the new Golf won’t be built and instead the brand will only offer petrol, diesel and plug-in hybrid varieties. Filling the gap left by the e-Golf will be the I.D., likely priced at around the same as the Golf diesel.

“It won’t have an e-Golf because we will stop electrification of next generation Golf at plug-in hybrid, so that’s what it still has essentially. If you look at the battery pack of the MQB [in the current e-Golf] it is distributed everywhere. It looks fantastic, but it looks not very optimal,” he said.

Helping to push Volkswagen into the electrified future will be its all-new MEB platform, built specifically for EVs. This platform will be used by all models in the I.D. range, including the I.D. Crozz and I.D. Buzz.
