With people now paying for things with a simple tap of their phone or smartwatch, DS has decided to jump on the contactless payment craze by creating a car key that eliminates the need for a bank card for small purchases.
Set to come standard on the DS 3 Connected Chic hatchback, the key can be used at card payment terminals for any payment of 30 euros ($35) or less and uses a Radio-Frequency Identification (RFID) to ensure it is secure from fraudsters. To top up the key fob, all users have to do is load money via a dedicated smartphone app.
Speaking about the key, the brand’s UK marketing director Mark Blundell said it is perfect for the active lifestyles of DS customers.
“At DS we're always looking at how we can credibly complement our customer's active lifestyles, where staying connected and being able to easily interact with the world is key. With the DS contactless payment car key, we really feel we have achieved this,” he said.
DS says it will monitor customer sentiment about the key before potentially rolling it out to other models.
