AMG Says The GT R Black Series Will Be All About Track Performance

The boss of Mercedes-AMG, Tobias Moers, has confirmed that an AMG GT R Black Series is in the works and that it’ll be focused on track performance.

Speaking to Motoring at the Frankfurt Motor Show, Moers said the Black Series won’t arrive until near the end of the AMG GT’s lifecycle so is still a few years away. Even still, the automaker has lofty ambitions for the car.

“The GT R is still very competitive and is doing quite well [but] when we do a Black Series it’s going to happen in the GT family. The GT R for sure chassis-wise is capable of more power. So yes, Black Series should always have a little bit more power but it’s not all about horsepower — it’s all about the handling, the performance on the track,” he confirmed.

“Yes, we can do more. GT R is less weight than GT S so yes, we’re working on that. For Black Series it will be mandatory to reduce weight.”

In recent months, a number of mysterious GT R prototypes have been spied testing at the Nurburgring, apparently in Black Series guise.

At this early stage, it seems inevitable that AMG will increase power from the vehicle’s 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 to well over 600 hp. Numerous aerodynamic modifications will also distinguish the Black Series from the rest of the GT family.
