Holden told the Australian market that it would launch 24 new models between 2015 and 2020. We're about halfway there, and it's just presented the 13th.
It's the new Holden Astra Sportwagon, which is, as you might have guessed, the estate counterpart to the Holden Astra sedan and hatchback already introduced. Or to put it another way, it's the same Astra Sports Tourer we've already seen, but with a Holden badge instead of Opel's or Vauxhall's.
Designed and engineered in Germany and built in the UK, the Astra Sportwagon was envisioned as GM's overseas competitor to the likes of the Toyota Auris Touring Sports and VW Golf Estate. Now Opel/Vauxhall has been sold to PSA, but it'll continue furnishing Holden with European-made vehicles for the time being.
With the rear seats folded flat, the Astra wagon offers over 57.5 cubic feet of cargo space, giving it the capacity of some SUVs – without the larger form factor. Motivation comes from a 1.4-liter turbo four rated at 147 horsepower and mated to a six-speed automatic transmission, with pricing starting at $25,740 in Australian dollars (or a smidge over $20k in US dollars).
