Sebastian Vettel Opens Up Championship Lead After Hungary Win

Sebastian Vettel has walked away as winner of the Hungarian Grand Prix and stretched out his championship lead to 14 points heading into the summer break.

In a race which saw very little overtaking due to the track layout at Hungary and the exceptionally high temperatures, Vettel led from start-to-finish after qualifying on pole position. Teammate Kimi Raikkonen crossed the finish line second while Valtteri Bottas scored third, Lewis Hamilton fourth and Max Verstappen fifth.

The start of the race was full of drama, as many expected. Heading into turn 2, Daniel Ricciardo overtook Verstappen after starting sixth on the grid. However, eager to reclaim his position, Verstappen outbraked himself and skidded into the side of his teammate, bursting Ricciardo’s radiator and puncturing his left rear tire, forcing the Australian to retire just moments later.

For most of the race, the top five were running their own individual races as it was so difficult to overtake. With about 20 laps remaining, Mercedes asked Bottas to let the faster Hamilton past in an effort to chase down Raikkonen and Vettel. However, the Brit was unable to overtake either of his Ferrari rivals and let Bottas reclaim third position heading into the final turn of the 70th lap.

Perhaps the hero of the race was Fernando Alonso who somehow finished sixth while setting the fastest lap of the race.
