Porsche Could Launch A More Affordable 911 For Purists

Porsche says it is open to the idea of building accessible Porsche 911 models in the vein of the limited-run and highly-desirable 911R.

During an interview with Autocar at the press launch of the latest-generation Cayenne, the automaker’s research and development boss Michael Steiner said additional “purist versions of sports cars with no limitation” on production numbers could be on the cards.

Steiner’s statement is far from confirmation that Porsche is actively working on such a model, but he did say the carmaker found that many of its customers enjoy a raw driving experience after launching the 911R.

“What we learned is that there are more and more customers who enjoy pure, fun-to-drive sports cars. Porsche always has some limited as well as unlimited sports cars. For pure sports cars, there’s no need for limitation,” he said.

An affordable and accessible 911 designed for purists make sense and could take the shape of a mid-range model with a six-speed ‘box, minimal weight, sound deadening and one of the company’s new turbocharged engines. Porsche would simply need to ensure such a model wouldn’t undermine the Boxster and Cayman family.
