Audi Shows New A8’s Fully Active Suspension, Traffic Jam Pilot [w/Videos]

Audi keeps releasing information about their all-new A8 flagship ahead of the official reveal, and this time tells us about its fully active suspension.

The company is taking full advantage of the 48-volt electrical system that will be adopted by all the versions of the new Audi A8 and the proof also lies to its fully active, electromechanical suspension system.

Each wheel gets an electric motor which is fed by the electrical system, and components like gears, a rotary tube that includes an internal titanium torsion bar and a lever that applies up to 1,100 Nm (811.3 lb-ft) of torque on the suspension via a coupling rod.

The new system also collaborates with the A8’s front camera, which detects bumps early on and predictively adjusts the suspension. This means that even before the car reaches a bump, the camera has already sent a signal for the right amount of travel to the actuators. Audi even claims that their new active suspension can virtually eliminate any vibrations and jolts.

The electronic chassis platform also processes the information coming from the road surface, controlling at the same time all of the suspension components almost in real time. Audi promises that the new A8 will deliver an entirely new driving experience, thanks to its new suspension.

During cornering, rolling movements are minimized, as wells as pitching movements under braking or accelerating. Audi has also combined their active steering rack with rear axle steering, calling it dynamic all-wheel steering, which claims to have resolved the conflict between agility and stability.

The new Audi A8 will make its official world debut on July 11 at the first Audi Summit in Barcelona.
