Mercedes-AMG will unveil its long-awaited four-door, four-seater in production guise at January’s Detroit Auto Show.
AMG revealed the vehicle in concept form at the Geneva Motor Show earlier this year as a precursor to a Porsche Panamera rival. Following the car’s positive reception, it has been given the go-ahead for production.
Company boss Tobias Moers recently confirmed to Motoring that the four-door will be based on the same platform as the E63 and that it will spawn a family of variants following its early 2018 premiere.
“There’ll be more than one engine, not just 63,” Moers said, adding that there will “absolutely” be a hybrid just “not from the beginning.”
Contrary to what some reports have suggested, the vehicle won’t be called the GT4 and instead adopt an unknown name.
If you’re scratching your heads as to how the AMG sedan will exist alongside the upcoming, third-gen CLS, remember this; the new CLS won’t be offered in fully-fledged AMG guise, except for the mid-tier CLS53. Additionally, the new CLS will be more focused on luxury and have five seats. By comparison, the AMG will be a four-seater, focused on performance (think Panamera Turbo), have a more overt design and cost a little bit more.
