Hot Hatches Don’t Come More Special Than Renault's Megane R26R

The French know how to turn an everyday hatchback into a giant killer and there isn’t a more perfect example from the Renault Megane R26R.

Back in 2008, Renault presented the world with a stripped-out version of the Megane RS called the R26R. It was lighter than the normal model thanks to the removal of the rear bench, the air-con, the radio, the rear wash/wipe, headlamp washers, most of the soundproofing, the use of a carbon-fiber bonnet, polycarbonate windows for the rear side and tailgate and many more.

To say it was hardcore, it would be an understatement. But at the same time Renault managed to create one of the most special vehicles on the market, at any price range. It was also the car that basically kickstarted the whole ‘fastest front-wheel drive production car around the ‘Ring’ theme.

Drivetribe
revisits the much loved Renault and brings together a VW Golf GTI Clubsport S, which is considered something like the modern equivalent of the R26R.

With the ability to fill the driver with the same kind of excitement you get from much more expensive performance models, no wonder these cars are considered more sports cars than just hot hatches.
