Mercedes-Benz is no stranger to developing absurd off-road vehicles, just look at the G63 6x6 and the G500 4x4² and thanks to one particularly ambitious company engineer, another vehicle has been added to the family.
Dubbed the Mercedes-Benz E-Class All-Terrain 4x4² and strictly a one-off, the car was dreamt up by Jurgen Eberle when he took delivery of his E-Class All-Terrain. Despite its name, the standard model isn’t all that focused on rough terrain so Eberle thought he’d transform it to ensure it really can tackle all terrain.
Most significantly the wagon has been fitted with a pair of portal axles which increase the ride height to a remarkable 16-inches. A set of 31-inch tires have also been fitted and the overall track widened by 8 inches.
Power for the E-Class All-Terrain 4x4² comes from a 3.5-liter turbocharged V6 delivering 328 hp, enough grunt to get it over some very difficult surfaces. However, unlike previous off-road creations of this sort from the automaker, the car makes do without a low range gearbox or locking differentials, hampering its off-road abilities.
Remarkably, a UK publication suggests the positive response to the car means Mercedes is now looking at an extremely limited production run.
