Porsche took the convertible version of the next 911, internally known as 992, out for some hot weather testing. Last time we saw the 992 Convertible prototype was during the winter and although the summer is much more suited to a car like this, Porsche’s engineers preferred to keep the soft top closed.
The next-gen Porsche 911 will be based on a brand new modular platform that will have the engines mounted more towards the center of the car, but still retain the traditional rear-engine setup. Bringing the engine closer to the center of the car makes sense, because Porsche will not only be able to improve the dynamics of the 911, but its aerodynamics as well.
All models will continue using a range of turbo flat-sixes, with Porsche planning to slightly update them for better fuel efficiency and more power. The latest rumor also says that Porsche is looking into offering the range-topping Turbo model with the Targa bodystyle as well.
The biggest visual revision of the 992 is that rear end, which is clearly inspired by the Mission E concept and will feature a LED strip across the width of the car, along with a new active rear wing that sits flush with the bodywork when not in use.
The new Porsche 992 is expected to debut in 2018 in both Coupe and Convertible bodystyles, with the Targa version to follow up on a later date.
