The new Opel Grandland X will become the first plug-in hybrid model to be offered from the German manufacturer, with the news announced directly from Michael Lohscheller, Opel’s CEO.
We already knew what Opel had in store for the 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show but the car maker preferred to keep the PHEV version a secret up until the last moment.
The new Opel Grandland X is based on the same platform with the Peugeot 3008 and will be offered initially with two engine options: a turbocharged 1.2-liter petrol with 130PS (128hp) and 230Nm (170lb-ft) of torque and a 1.6-liter diesel with 120PS (118hp) and 300Nm (221lb-ft) of torque.
Lohscheller announced that Opel is going to expand the new Grandland X’s range not only with a range-topping diesel version paired to an eight-speed automatic transmission but a plug-in hybrid version as well, which will most likely share the same technology with Peugeot’s own 3008 PHEV.
“Our new Grandland X as plug-in hybrid is the next big example of the opportunities that await us as a member of the PSA group,” said Lohscheller at the press conference. “We will follow this path closely.”
As for the rest of the world premieres, Opel showcased the range-topping GSi versions of the new Insignia and the Insignia Grand Tourer, a crossover-like jacked-up version of the wagon model for the more adventurous type of customer.
