Following the exit of both Audi and Porsche from the World Endurance Championship’s LMP1 category, it’s been revealed that the championship’s calendar could be slashed in size and become a winter championship.
Sportscar365 reports that as many as three races could be dropped for the 2018 championship, including the season-opener at Silverstone. Additionally, races at both the Circuit of the Americas in Texas and the event in Mexico City are under threat.
French media asserts that alongside these three rounds being cut from the championship, next year’s season may not commence until after the 24 Hours of Le Mans in the middle of the year.
The future of LMP1 remains up in the air. There’s a possibility that Toyota will take part in a limited season next year but without any competition, it is hard to see the Japanese automaker sticking around for very long.
Whatever happens to LMP1, most other classes in the WEC appear to be safe. In fact, WEC chief executive Gerard Neveu has previously said qualifying races could be added for GTE-Pro cars.
