Automakers frequently patent cool and interesting ideas they have and details of a patent filed by Ford have just emerged and it’s interesting to say the least.
Published on July 6, the patent shows a retractable bike rack that consists of two sturdy rails that carry a selection of pivoting anchors and provide enough room to place two bicycles side-by-side. When the rack isn’t in use, it simply retracts into the rear fascia of the vehicle.
In the patent images, the system has been depicted on a Ford Mustang, not the first car you’d think of for such an invention. Nevertheless, this doesn’t mean the bike rack has been invented with just the Mustang in mind, Ford says it could be designed to work on a number of different vehicles, including SUVs and crossovers.
It is impossible to know if Ford actually intends on bringing the system to the market but if it does, we’d expect it to initially be an option on something like the Explorer, not the Mustang.
