Porsche 911 Hybrid Would Be The "Best 911 Ever" According To Company Spokesman

Porsche has used plug-in hybrid technology to create some truly impressive vehicles including the 918 Spyder and the Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid but the system has remained absent from the 911.

Rumors of a 911 hybrid have been floating around for awhile and Porsche Technology Communications spokesman Hermann-Josef Stappen has revealed “If we will bring a hybrid 911, it will also again be the best 911 ever."

Despite being optimistic about the model, Stappen told Motoring there are concerns about how many vehicles the company could sell and whether or not customers would be willing to accept a plug-in hybrid version of the iconic sports car. Stappen went on to say the company is "constantly" looking at a 911 hybrid but nothing has been decided as of yet.

The news isn't terribly surprising as there has been conflicting reports about whether or not the company would offer a hybrid version of the next-generation 911. Back in May, Porsche's head of 911 development suggested the model was axed because the "disadvantages outweighed the advantages." Problems reportedly included high-development costs and a heavy battery pack which would limit the car's dynamic capabilities.

While a 911 hybrid might not happen in the near future, Stappen hinted the 718 could be a good candidate for a plug-in hybrid variant as he noted “There would only be minor changes to the platform to put in electric drive."
