It may have made financial sense for Porsche to drop the manual gearbox option from the 911 GT3 RS in its 991-generation but there are still some hardcore enthusiasts out there you think the German sports car manufacturer made the wrong move.
One dedicated Porsche fan and prolific collector over at the Rennlist forums recently decided to take matters into his own hands and embark on a world first project, fitting the 991-generation GT3 RS with the six-speed manual of the rare 911 R.
The man behind the project, Rob Janev, put just 900 miles on his latest GT3 RS before deciding it was time to ditch the PDK transmission for something more involving. With an ambitious plan brewing in his head, he called up the crew from BGB Motorsports and for the next seven to eight months, time was dedicated to simply working out how the plan could come to fruition.
After searching, a 911 R transmission was purchased from Suncoast Porsche Parts after the highly-praised gearbox was added to the Porsche parts catalog. It costs approximately $22,000 and a few weeks ago, was successful slotted in the RS and bolted up to the screaming, naturally-aspirated six-cylinder engine.
Around a track, Janev’s GT3 RS may not be as fast as it once was but for the added involvement of the 911 R transmission, we doubt he cares.
