Toyota is making a long-awaited return to the performance market and especially at the hot hatch segment with the new Yaris GRMN but as it turns out, the company isn’t planning to sell as many as they can.
The Japanese company will cap production of Europe’s first Gazoo Racing model to just 400 units for the European market, with more than 100 of them destined for the UK, according to Autocar.
Development of the Yaris GRMN hasn’t finished yet, with Toyota set to start production at the end of autumn.
Toyota wants the new Yaris GRMN to be the lightest, fastest and most powerful model in the segment. Power comes from a supercharged 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine that makes around 210hp while the only transmission option is a six-speed manual gearbox.
The chassis has been stiffened with the use of additional bracing while the suspension now utilizes shorter springs and a set of fixed-rate Sachs dampers. A Torsen limited-slip differential is also present, to help the car cope with the increased power. There are no fancy driving modes and other gadgets here as Toyota followed a very simple -and hopefully fun- recipe in order to create the hottest Yaris ever.
First driving impressions already talk about a very amusing-to-drive hot hatch, so it’s interesting to see how the finished Toyota Yaris GRMN will be like once it hits the market. That is of course if you’re able to secure one, because with only 400 ever made, this one will remain one rare sight.
