Toyota says that unlike many of its rivals, it doesn’t intend on simply turbocharging all its engines to improve fuel efficiency and cut emissions.
Instead, Toyota Motor North America’s powertrain executive program manager for advanced planning and research, Ben Schlimme, said that the company is investing heavily on refining its naturally-aspirated engines.
With the 2018 Toyota Camry, the carmaker premiered its Dynamic Force engine strategy, focusing on improving its multitude of engines. In the Camry’s 2.5-liter naturally-aspirated four-cylinder engine, Toyota has managed to make it more powerful, more fuel efficient and achieve a thermal efficiency rate of 40 per cent.
How? According to Schlimme, this was achieved through four key areas; exhaust flow, friction reduction, cooling and the intake system.
At the moment, Toyota has focused its energy on the 2.5-liter but Schlimme told Automotive News that the firm plans to adopt a similar approach when refining its other engines.
