Over nine months after launching in California and Oregan, U.S. sales of the Chevrolet Bolt have finally eclipsed those of the Volt following the EV’s nationwide rollout.
In both July and August, Bolt sales surpassed the Volt with August alone accounting for 2,107 sales. That figure is 83 per cent higher than the outgoing Nissan Leaf could muster up last month and also puts the Bolt ahead of more premium offerings like the Audi A3, Mercedes-Benz CLA, Mazda CX-9 and Jaguar F-Pace.
Whereas the Bolt is all-electric, the Volt is a plug-in hybrid that features a compact internal combustion engine to extend its range. The car has been kicking around since 2011 and while one may have expected to see it superseded by the Bolt, GM spokesperson Jim Cain told The Truth About Cars that the Volt “offers its own solution to range anxiety.”
Since premiering late last year, the introduction of the Bolt throughout the United States has been slow. Following its initial availability in California and Oregon, sales swelled to include Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Virginia and Washington. The likes of Arizona, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Illinois, New Hampshire, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Texas and Vermont then received the Bolt. Now, all states are selling it to customers.
