Lamborghini Supercars Will Soon Become Hybrids

Lamborghini may be relatively late to the party when it comes to hybrid supercars but better late than never.

Speaking to Car Advice at the Frankfurt Motor Show, research and development chief Maurizio Reggiani confirmed that the automaker’s next-generation of super sports cars will be plug-in hybrids and not all-electric vehicles.

“If I look in the next outlook of a super sports car, I see PHEV (plug-in hybrid) being the next jump in technology, full-electric [technology isn’t] suitable for a super sports car.

“In terms of maximum speed, packaging, weight of the battery and for this reason we are looking for, the next generation of super sport vehicle will be focused on PHEV technology where we wish the weight of the battery and packaging can decrease,” Reggiani said.

Three years ago, Lamborghini presented its very first hybrid concept, the Asterion LPI910-4. It saw the 5.2-liter V10 engine of the Huracan paired to three electric motors delivering a combined 296 hp and was used as a showcase of the firm’s technology.

However, the brand’s first PHEV supercar won’t be Huracan-based but instead be the successor to the Aventador, tipped to arrive early next decade with a naturally-aspirated V12 and hybridization.
