Volkswagen is betting on electric vehicles to it get past the Dieselgate scandal and a new photo suggests at least five different models are in the works.
Posted by Autoblog.nl's sister site, the image suggests the company will offer an assortment of models based on the new MEB platform.
Things will kick in 2020 when Volkswagen launches the production version of the I.D. concept in Europe. Originally unveiled at the 2016 Paris Motor Show, the I.D. concept is a stylish five-door hatchback which features a 170 PS (125 kW) electric motor and a range of between 400-600 km (248-372 miles). The car will be priced comparably with a "powerful and well-equipped Golf" and the concept could accelerate from 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) in less than eight seconds.
The car will be followed by the I.D. Cross which was previewed by a concept at the Shanghai Motor Show earlier this year. There's no word on specifications but the concept had an 83 kWh lithium-ion battery that powered two electric motors. This setup gave the all-wheel drive concept a combined output of 306 PS (225 kW) and a range of up to 500 km (310 miles).
The I.D. AEROe and I.D. Lounge are a bit of a mystery but the image reveals the models will be available in China and the United States. Nothing is official, but the AEROe appears to be a sporty sedan or coupe while the Lounge could be a crossover or MPV.
Last but not least, Volkswagen will offer a production version of the I.D. Buzz concept. Despite having retro-inspired styling, the concept had two electric motors and a combined output of 374 PS (275 kW). This enabled the all-wheel drive model accelerate from 0-60 mph in around five seconds before hitting a top speed of 160 km/h (99 mph).
