Unless you have a bank account with eight, nine or 10 figures in it, the $1.8 million asking price of this McLaren P1 on James Edition will seem like an absurd amount of money for a car. However, in the hybrid hypercar market, it is a relative bargain.
It is no secret that of the three hybrid hypercars, the Ferrari LaFerrari is the most valuable, with some examples being sold for in excess of $5 million. But, for over $3 million less, enthusiasts could pick up a car that is just as fast, slightly rarer and turns just as many heads.
At the moment, P1s and Porsche 918 Spyders are trading for similar prices (between $1.5 million and $2 million) and unlike some, the simple black paint finish of this P1 is inoffensive and won’t date like a number of brightly-colored examples. It also has just 746 miles (1,200 km) on the clock and an appealing interior clad in dark red leather, black alcantara and exposed carbon fiber.
McLaren hasn’t yet perfected the art of curating a market to ensure its limited-edition vehicles are good investments quite like Ferrari, so it is hard to predict what the market holds for the P1.
If we were to take an educated guess, we’d say that the P1 may appreciate in the coming years, but may never reach the figures the LaFerrari is fetching. Either way, this example looks as good as any for those that missed out on an initial allocation.
