BMW recently confirmed plans to resurrect the CSL moniker and new details are starting to emerge about the M2 CSL.
According to Autocar's sources, the model will be introduced towards the end of the 2-Series' lifecycle similar to what the company did with the 1-Series M Coupe.
While the current M2 has a 3.0-liter TwinPower Turbo six-cylinder engine that develops 365 hp (272 kW), the report suggests the CSL variant will receive a detuned version of the S55 engine that resides in the M3 and M4. Producing around 400 hp (298 kW), the engine should enable the M2 CSL to accelerate from 0-60 mph in less than four seconds.
Power will reportedly be sent exclusively to the rear wheels through either a six-speed manual or a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.
Little else is known about the car but it will reportedly be equipped with a number of carbon fiber components to help to reduce weight. The model is also slated to receive a stripped-out interior with sport seats.
The company has high hopes for the model as BMW M vice president Dirk Hacker told the publication the M2 is exceeding initial sales expectations and "demand for cars like the M2, GTS, and CS heritage models is growing." He added, "Any car that has true heritage to motorsport is an opportunity for us."
