The Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi alliance has unveiled a six-year plan which calls on the companies to work together to cut costs and launch 12 new electric vehicles.
Presented by chairman Carlos Ghosn, the Alliance 2022 plan calls for the companies to double annual synergies to €10 ($11.9) billion and "accelerate collaboration on common platforms, powertrains, and next-generation electric, autonomous, and connected technologies."
As part of the plan, the companies will increase their use of common platforms. The alliance aims to build around nine million vehicles on four common platforms in 2022 and expects to "extend the use of common powertrains to 75 percent of total sales."
As previously mentioned, the alliance will launch 12 new electric vehicles by 2022. They will be underpinned by common electric vehicle platforms and share components even though they will be introduced in multiple segments.
Speaking of technology, 40 vehicles will be introduced with different levels of autonomous driving capability. Some will be fully autonomous and Ghosn says becoming an "operator of robo-vehicle ride-hailing services is a major part of the new mobility services strategy."
The alliance was light on specifics but confirmed plans to launch a new B-segment platform for mid-sized vehicles as well as a new EV platform with "advanced autonomous drive capability."
On the topic of electric vehicles, a new family of electric motors and batteries will be introduced in 2020. This will pave the way for a long-range electric vehicle which can travel more than 600 km (372 miles). The alliance also expects a 15 minute charging time will deliver a range of 230 km (142 miles) by 2022.
The alliance also plans to introduce a common infotainment and connectivity system as well as adopt Mitsubishi's plug-in hybrid system on C/D segment vehicles by 2022.
