Toyota To Launch Dozens Of Electrified Vehicles

The North American International Auto Show is four months away but The Detroit Bureau is reporting Toyota will use the event to announce its new electrification strategy.

Once a leader in eco-friendly vehicles, Toyota has lost that image to newer rivals such as Tesla who have embraced electric vehicles. The company is looking to get things back on track and the report suggests the automaker will use the show to announce plans to add "dozens" of electrified vehicles to its lineup.

Details are lacking at the moment but the company is expected to announce several new hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and electric vehicles. The various models will reportedly be added to the Toyota lineup over the course of the next decade.

Toyota has been slow to introduce electric vehicles but it appears the hesitation is finally over. The first models are slated to arrive in 2021 and use solid-state batteries. The solid-state batteries are expected to be lighter than lithium-ion batteries and they could have significantly faster recharging times.

Nothing is official but the report suggests the electric vehicles could be produced at the company's new plant which is being built as part of a partnership with Mazda.
