Porsche has started testing the all-electric Mission E on public roads, with our spies spotting plenty of production-bodied prototypes next to some Teslas for obvious benchmarking purposes.
The prototypes were spotted outside Porsche’s R&D center in Weissach, wearing lots of masking tape, fake light stickers and exhaust tips in a bid to hide their identity, but the overall design clearly indicates that the final car will retain much of the concept’s sporty silhouette.
The production version of the Mission E will be based on a different EV platform than the one to be used on Audi’s E-Tron electric SUV, one that has a lower floor to better suit the character of the electric Porsche.
Porsche is reportedly gunning for a driving range of more than 330 miles, with the Mission E to feature a pair of electric motors with ‘over 600PS’ in total and a 0-200km/h (124mph) in less than 12 seconds. The company will also give the production Mission E the 800-volt technology it previewed on the concept, which will allow shorter charging times and less weight.
The target is for the Porsche Mission E to offer an 80 percent charge in just 15 minutes, something that will be a true game-changer in the EV market. The company is also working on a Level 4 autonomous system for the Mission E, as well as over-the-air software updates, just like Tesla does with its models.
