Shelby American has created a one-off model based on a 1997 Ford Mustang.
According to the company, Joseph Tice approached them about the possibility of doing something unique with his 1997 Mustang GT. Tice wanted the car to look like it was an original Shelby version but he also requested the vehicle be equipped with "contemporary technology and performance."
Shelby isn't known for these types of requests but the company has done a handful of one-off models in the past including the Green Hornet and the Little Red. Taking this into consideration, the company decided to accept the challenge.
Upon receiving the car, Shelby completely disassembled it and began transforming it into the "Red Racer." As part of this process, the company rebuilt the car's 4.6-liter V8 engine and then installed a Procharger supercharger, an intercooler, and a Flowmaster exhaust system. The team also rebuilt the transmission and added a short throw shifter, an adjustable clutch quadrant, and an upgraded driveshaft.
Besides the engine and transmission upgrades, Shelby installed a new hood, a "body appearance package," and new tires and wheels. The company also painted the car and added Shelby badging.
The interior is completely new as the team replaced the seats, carpet, and dash pad. Shelby also added a new gauge pod and a CSM100SPECIAL badge.
According to Shelby American CEO Joe Conway, “We built this car for someone who believed the only limits should be his imagination. We’ve not yet determined if we’ll repeat this type of project again, but it certainly challenged our team."
