The Mystery Audi R8 Prototype Could Be An Entry-Level Model With A Bi-Turbo V6

A few days ago, spy photographers snapped photos of a mysterious Audi R8 prototype. It was initially believed to be a high-performance model, which could revive the R8 GT moniker, but a new report is indicating that isn't the case.

While nothing is official at this point, Autocar says the vehicle in question is actually the entry-level R8. While the massive dual exhaust system seems to indicate otherwise, the publication is reporting the prototype is equipped with the same twin-turbo 2.9-liter V6 engine that powers the Audi RS4 and RS5.

The engine produces 450 PS (331 kW) and 600 Nm (442 lb-ft) of torque in the aforementioned models but the mill is reportedly capable of developing more than 507 PS (373 kW) and up to 677 Nm (500 lb-ft) of torque. There's no word on how much power the R8 will have but Autocar says officials have previously confirmed the engine will be offered with multiple outputs.

If everything pans out, the entry-level model will be launched next year and slot beneath the R8 V10. That particular car has a 5.2-liter V10 engine with 540 PS (397 kW) and 540 Nm (398 lb-ft) of torque. It is connected to a seven-speed S tronic transmission and a quattro all-wheel drive system which enables it to accelerate from 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) in 3.5 seconds before hitting a top speed of 320 km/h (198 mph).
