We never thought we'd see it, but the day is almost upon us when Mercedes-Benz will replace the G-Wagen. We know because we've seen the camouflaged prototypes running around while undergoing development, and here we have another. Only this appears to be no ordinary G.
What we seem to have here is the next-generation Mercedes-AMG G63, the performance version that is likely to pack Affalterbach's latest 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8.
The new engine (known internally by the designation M178) has already found its way into the AMG GT, C63, and E63, where it produces as much as 612 horsepower. The more compact unit has been gradually working its way across the AMG lineup to replace the old 5.5, and we fully expect the new G to employ it as well.
Of course there'll be more enhancements to distinguish the AMG model from the “standard” Gelandewagen, including wider fenders, bigger air intakes, a beefed-up suspension, and up-sized rolling stock.
These spy shots also provide our best glimpse yet inside the new G's interior, which is where it's sure to distinguish itself from the outgoing model that's essentially been in production since 1979. The cabin appears to borrow heavily from the latest E-Class and make use of a wider frame for more interior space, with an anticipated weight reduction of some 900 pounds promising to improve its demeanor in every way both on the road and off it.
Those enamored by the current model and sad to see it go, however, may take solace in the rumors that Mercedes (or more specifically Magna-Steyr) could continue building the old model alongside the new one as a more budget-oriented workhorse for another few years.
