Tesla Model 3 Performance Variant Coming In 2018

Tesla chief executive Elon Musk has revealed that a performance version of the Model 3 should arrive next year.

Shortly after the electric vehicle start-up revealed the Model 3 in prototype guise in March 2016, Musk said a performance version would be offered. However, nothing has been mentioned since, until a Tesla enthusiast quizzed the executive about it on Twitter yesterday.

In response, Musk said: “Probably middle of next year. Focus now is on getting out of Model 3 production hell. More versions = deeper in hell.”

For the time being, Tesla is focused on streamlining the ordering process for the Model 3 in an effort to speed up production and deliveries. During the Model 3’s weekend reveal, Musk said the next six months would be “hell” as production ramps up.

Electrek believes that a performance-oriented Model 3 will most likely use the range-topping 310-mile battery pack available for the sedan. Unlike the standard car that has rear-wheel drive, Tesla will probably pair the battery with two motors and all-wheel drive, just like the Model S and Model X.
