All-Electric Microbus Coming As Part Of Volkswagen's 'ID' Range

Volkswagen's chief, Herbert Diess, confirmed what was already on everyone's minds ever since the ID Buzz Concept was revealed earlier this year: that the minivan will eventually go into production.

Speaking to AutoExpress, Diess said: "Emotional cars are very important for the brand. We are selling loads of Beetles, still, particularly in US markets. But we also have the Microbus that we showed (in the form of the ID Buzz), which we have recently decided we will build."

Part of Volkswagen's ID range of electric vehicles, the production version of the ID Buzz study will ride on the new MEB platform. It's expected to maintain its looks, which were inspired by the classic Type 2 Microbus of the 1950s, with a boxy style, dual-tone paintjob, and large VW badge sitting at the front.

If everything goes as planned, then expect other versions of the modern microbus, just like the original, according to the company's design boss, Oliver Stefano: "The T1 also had some family members, like the pick-up, the camper, the Samba, so I think there are a lot of possibilities with this car."

An exact launch date for the modern zero-emission Microbus has yet to be announced, but we could be looking at 2020, when the production variant of the ID Buzz Concept will probably join MOIA, Volkswagen's answer to Uber.
