Mercedes G-Class Gets An Optional Stainless Steel Package

Mercedes, Mercedes G-Class

Since #Mercedes lifted the veil off its new G-Class, we’ve seen it in a variety of trims and appearances. And now we have one more.

The latest option to surface for the fresh G-Wagen is the Stainless Steel package, which is exactly what it sounds like it would be. The cosmetic package adds running boards, sill protectors, door stripes, spare tire carrier, rear bumper accents, and more – all done up in (you guessed it) stainless steel.

As the Mercedes-Benz Passion blog points out, the treatment already comes standard on the AMG G63 version, but will be offered on “lesser” versions as well – which in the US, at least, will come down to the G550. Both versions are motivated by versions of Daimler’s 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8, driving all four wheels and housed in the same essential vehicle – as capable as ever, but significantly refined over the long-serving model it replaces. Only where the G550’s engine produces 415 horsepower and 450 lb-ft of torque, the G63’s version is handcrafted by the technicians in Affalterbach to kick out 577 hp and 627 lb-ft of torque.

Expect other engines to be offered in markets overseas, particularly where diesels are popular. In the US, we may not see another powertrain option until the twelve-cylinder G65 comes along, unless we see a hybrid version come out before then.

Setting aside the prospect of future engine options, the Stainless Steel package is just one of the exterior appearance options available for the new G, alongside the AMG Line and Night Packages we’ve seen previously. The full AMG performance model also gets its own Night Package, and we suspect there’ll be more to come in the near future as well.
