German Officials Order Porsche To Recall Diesel Cayennes Over Illegal Software

German government ordered Porsche to recall thousands of Cayenne models equipped with the 3.0-liter V6 diesel as it found evidence of the models using a defeat device.

German Transport Minister Alexander Dobrindt said that 22,000 Cayenne models sold in Europe are equipped with the emissions-cheating device and that he was withdrawing the certification of these vehicles, Reuters reports.

He also said that Porsche will bear the 100 percent of the cost of the recall and that there is a “high probability” that the VW Touareg also features similar software.

"This has not yet been checked by us and will now be carried out immediately," he said. "Volkswagen will cooperate with us to ensure that these vehicles, if there is a similar software there, are then subjected to the appropriate procedures."

Porsche said that they had discovered the software during an internal investigation and that they have agreed to recall the affected vehicles to fix the problem. "This vehicle is a vehicle still in production," Dobrindt said.

The German government will impose a registration ban on cars that are still being sold until a fix is applied, which has to be approved by the KBA authority of Germany. Around 7,000 of the 22,000 affected Cayennes are registered in Germany.
