Tesla Wants To Build 2 Or 3 More Gigafactories In The U.S.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk has revealed the company wants to open several new Gigafactories in the United States.

Speaking at the National Governors Association meeting in Rhode Island, the outspoken executive said the automaker wants to build two or three more Gigafactories over the course of the next few years.

Musk was coy on specifics but the timing and location of the announcement probably wasn't a coincidence as he was surrounded by high-profile politicians who would love to bring a Gigafactory to their state. This will likely cause several states to approach the automaker with incentive packages and tax breaks.

The move could also put pressure on a handful of states, such as Michigan, that don't allow Tesla to sell vehicles within their borders.

Tesla's desire to open new Gigafactories isn't surprising as the company already has hundreds of thousands of reservations for the Model 3 and the current delivery estimate for new reservations is mid-2018 or later. Any new Gigafactory would probably take a few years to construct so it's unlikely the announcement will have any immediate impact on production.
