Australian Man Confirmed As 18th Takata Airbag Victim

An Australian man killed in a Sydney crash is the 18th victim of faulty Takata airbags.

The Sydney Morning Herald reports that police confirmed the 58-year-old man was killed after being hit in the neck by flying debris from his airbag. Honda Australia director Stephen Collins later confirmed that the CR-V the man was driving was involved in Takata’s ongoing worldwide recall.

“The vehicle involved, a 2007 Honda CR-V, was the subject of Takata airbag inflator recalls,” Collins said.

The incident saw the man collide with a Toyota Celica in Cabramatta and his female passenger was treated at the scene with non-life threatening injuries. Additionally, the two male occupants of the Celica were treated with minor injuries.

News of this death comes just two weeks after a male killed in a June 2016 crash in the U.S. was confirmed as the 17th victim of the faulty airbags.
