Nissan's Recalling Another Half Million Versas For Takata Airbags

It's been about three years now since the Takata airbag debacle first surfaced, and the scope of the recall doesn't show any signs of slowing down. This time it's Nissan that's adding fuel to the fire by recalling over half a million more vehicles in the United States alone.

The latest expansion relates to the Versa – both sedan and hatchback – from the 2007 to 2011 model years (2012 in the latter's case).

Nissan figures there to be 515,394 of these vehicles affected in the US, all of which will need to have the airbags in their steering wheels replaced lest they rupture and potentially injure their drivers. Unfortunately Takata, which recently declared bankruptcy, doesn't have enough replacement airbags on hand, so it may be some time yet before this campaign can be carried out to completion.

Owners of the affected vehicles can expect to receive preliminary notification in September, and will be contacted again when the replacement units are available.
