BMW is looking into ditching the traditional car key according to Ian Robertson, the company’s board member responsible for sales.
Since each customer is now carrying a smartphone and there’s the dedicated BMW app that allows them to unlock their car, traditional keys are becoming less relevant and necessary.
“Honestly, how many people really need it?” Robertson said to Reuters during the Frankfurt Motor Show, explaining that BMW customers no longer had to put the key in the ignition to make the car start.
“They never take it out of their pocket, so why do I need to carry it around?,” he said, adding that the company was looking at getting rid of keys altogether.
Although BMW isn’t the only or first automaker to have this idea -Tesla and the Model 3 comes in mind- ditching the traditional car keys sounds the next logical step for the industry.
“We are looking at whether it is feasible, and whether we can do it. Whether we do it right now or at some point in the future, remains to be seen,” Robertson said.
