Two large Chinese automakers are investigating selling vehicles in Canada as they look to continue ongoing expansions.
Guangzhou Automobile Group Motor, which owns Trumpchi, has already confirmed that it will arrive in the United States in 2019 and could launch in Canada the following year, says company general manager Yu Jun.
Additionally, The Globe and Mail reports that SAIC Motor executives are currently in Canada to assess the market and are shaping up to compete against rivals from South Korea and Europe.
In an interview, Jun said that Guangzhou has enjoyed compounded annual growth of 85 per cent in the past six years and in 2016 sold 380,000 vehicles in China. Jun believes that its local success will prepare it for North America.
While Guangzhou's sales sales may be impressive in China, proving successful in Canada won't be easy as there is still a perception that the Chinese create cheap and poor quality products. While the new cars might turn out to be much better, shaking this stereotype will be no easy task.
