When it comes to strange Mercedes-Benz vehicles, it is hard to ignore the R-Class, in particular the R63 AMG variant.
It is reported that just a couple hundred examples of the AMG-powered R-Class were produced for the 2007 model year before it was killed off due to a lack of demand. Like the C63 AMG of the same time period, it is powered by a naturally-aspirated 6.2-liter V8 engine but unlike the C63, not everyone knows the R63 even exists.
As Doug DeMuro explains, the R63 AMG is ludicrously expensive but with its high cost comes a number of features you’d never expect to see in a minivan, including 15.4-inch front brakes, a sport mode for the suspension and powertrain and even an advanced air suspension system.
So, while the R63 AMG is only remembered by the biggest Mercedes enthusiasts, it does occupy a unique place in automotive history.
