A dozen people have been injured during Australia’s Red CentreNATS event in the country’s Northern Territory.
The incident happened in the midst of a burnout display and footage from the scene shows the moment burning fuel briefly engulfed the crowd of spectators.
The Australian reports that ten people were taken to the emergency department at Alice Springs Hospital and that a 47-year-old suffered critical injuries and burns to 20 per cent of his body. A number of the most seriously injured spectators are expected to be flown to Adelaide for treatment.
In a statement, organizers of the event said the burnout competition was cancelled after the blaze.
“Northern Territory Major Events acknowledge the respect that attendees gave to the situation and encourage any spectators affected to seek support and medical assistance. Police are currently investigating and further updates will be provided in the morning,” the statement read.
