Mercedes-AMG is a few steps ahead of arch-rival BMW, not only with the GT series, but also with the Project One.
However, that might change in the near future, as the Bavarian company is interested in launching a supercar to compete against the likes of the aforementioned model from Mercedes, reports Autocar.
What's standing between BMW and a true halo high-performance machine is the approval of the brand's vice president, Dirk Hacker, who spoke with the British publication on the subject.
"We would like to do a standalone car, and we could do it, but today there is no requirement from the market to do it", Hacker said. "As a company, we are more focused on future mobility than digitization than building a hypercar, to be honest, but if we came to the decision to do a super sportscar, then we could do that."
If it gets the green light, then BMW's Mercedes-AMG Project One rival could be electrified, and their presence in Formula E might play a lead role in its development.
"Formula E could be interesting for us. M cars have roots in racing. It will be an interesting challenge, as more OEMs get involved, and there could certainly be the opportunity for some input from our engineering department in the series", Hacker added.
