Audi recently suggested its decision to focus on plug-in hybrid and electric vehicles could spell doom for its V10 and W12 engines. However, Lamborghini is taking a different approach and will stick with them well into the future.
An interview with Autocar, Lamborghini's Director of Research and Development said "My dream is to maintain the naturally aspirated engine for as long as possible." Maurizio Reggiani went on to explain naturally aspirated engines are part of the company's DNA and their vehicles need to be emotional as well as fun.
Reggiani stated plug-in hybrid powertrains are currently too heavy for their sports car and that's simply not acceptable as it would ruin the driving experience. However, the future is fast approaching as Lamborghini is slated to offer the Urus with a twin-turbo V8 as well as a plug-in hybrid system. The R&D boss doesn't seem worried by this as he noted “The packaging of the batteries and the weight is less strategic than on a super-sports car."
Of course, Lamborghini will eventually offer a sports car with a plug-in hybrid powertrain and the company is already working on that front by asking suppliers to develop advanced electric motors and batteries for high-performance applications. Reggiani wouldn't get into specifics but suggested a plug-in hybrid sports car wouldn't arrive until the replacements for the Aventador and Huracan are introduced.
